Help! I need advice!

I tried to upgrade to a 1.33 ghz tbird on an Abit kt7a mobo. I installed the cpu and hsf with arctic silver. When I booted, the power light came on, the fans were spinning, but no post. Nothing appeared on the monitor, just a dark screen. I put the old tbird in and it fired right up? Did I get a bad cpu? Or did I overlook something? Thanks for your help!!!

Are you running in a jumperless mode or is the mother oard set with jumpers for the slower chip.

Actually, I was going from the 1ghz to the 1.333. Its the 1.333 that I had the problem with. Sorry, I wasn't clear. The board is jumperless. It uses Abit's SoftMenuII to change settings. The board should handle the 1.33 at 266fsb but I can't bring up softmenu to make the changes because it doesn't get that far. Thanks.

Sounds like it may be a bad chip. I just got a 900mhz back from amd. I changed everything in the system before calling and getting an rma. They Fedexed the new chip back over night (whole deal took about 2 weeks because I shipped the bad chip ups ground for them to inspect.) I would update the bios and change the setup with the 1gig in. Then shut down change chips and try to start it up. If it does not boot, power down put the 1gig back in and boot up. If the system does not boot clear the bios and it should boot back to the 1gig. After that I would call amd or return it to the seller.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS (usually done via moving a jumper, should be outlined in your motherboard manual) and seeing whether you can get the system to POST? HTH
