ATA cable Select and Bootable CD

My PC expertise comes from my last build in 1997. I've got the usual issues of routing ide cables, but now I see a problem because of the new ata cable type, the "cable select" feature, and booting XP from a CD.

I understand that XP will need to boot from its CD. Does that mean the CD has to be a Primary device?

If so, in order to use "cable select" AND to keep the cable tidy, I have to make the CD master and the HDD slave. I might be able to twist the cable around a bit, but I don't like doing that. I don't know whether a CD master and the HDD slave is a good idea.

Before, I would have used the jumpers to make the HDD master and CD slave, even though the HDD was in the middle (grey as it is now) connector and the CD in the end (black as it is now) connector.

Of course I could put the CD on the Secondary and make it a master, but then I'm not sure if XP could boot from it.

Doesnt matter what way you put it , as long as in the bios , your boot options are set to
1 cd rom
2 hard drive

There are specific ways to connect up your drives to your board, but for now you should be able to leave things the way they are.

I'd use an Ultra cable on the primary and make the boot hard drive the master. The CD can be *anywhere* else and it will still be bootable.

So it can be slave or master on Primary or Secondary cables and it will be bootable?

Yeah it will be but the ::best:: way to do this is to put the hard drive on the primary channel making it master and the cd drive(s) on the secondary. A single drive must be master, keep that in mind.
good luck

Well, in the absense of being really sure I made the CD the master, but that'll change soon, so the HDD and CD are on one cable.

THe PC started OK. Bit surprised in one way, but having built so many older types, and done so many weird configurations, I might have justified more confidence.
Found the "Boot Order" section in the BIOS setup. Set CD, HDD, FDD.
Partitioned 80Gb into 30/30/remainder.
Installation process has been going for 25mins, with 25min left (so it says...)

And now it's finished. I set boot order to look at the HDD first. Booted fine. That took about 1hour from switching on a brand new PC. Now it's just a case of finding out how to use XP.
