cpu multiplier question

I am starting preparation for my first pc build.
In a book that i have bought, it is said to set cpu
multiplier. How does one do that?
I am building piii 800eb with asus cusl2-c mobo.

The CPU multiplier times the fsb(front side bus) equals the external cpu frequency. In your case it would be 8.0x100. Unless you plan to overclock you should leave the multiplier alone. The multiplier is already set when you purchase a processor.

Intel CPU's are multiplier locked. It doesn't matter what you set the multiplier to, it is only gonna run at 8x if that is the 100 MHz CPU, or 6x if that is the 133 MHz CPU. Most boards now days have all the adjustments made in BIOS, with very few, if any, jumpers on the MB. Your BIOS setup program should automatically detect the proper multiplier and set it for you anyway.

In your case, since it's an 800 "EB" cpu, the multiplier runs at 6x and the bus at 133mhz. On Intel PIII's, just an "E" indicates the cpu is a coppermine and runs at the 100mhz. "B" indicates the cpu runs at the 133mhz bus. "EB" indicates the cpu is a coppermine PIII and runs at 133mhz. HTH
