HDD / DVD problems

I took an old harddrive from an old computer and put it in my new computer. now, my DVD drive isn't working or showing up. Here's what I did:

1. i put the new [old] HD on the bus my old [existing] HD is on. turned it on, and windows 95 started up (the OS on the new [old] HD). Had a quick laugh, turned it off

2. i put the new [old] HD on the bus my DVD drive is on. XP started up, formated the new [old] HD.

3. nothing happens when i put a CD / DVD in the DVD drive (its a combo drive). DVD drive doesn't show up in device manager, and couldn't be found with install new hardware.

i'm sure there's something i've missed... please help!

Check your cabling and jumpering. If you are using 80 wire Ultra ATA cables, use CS, if you are using standard 40 wire IDE, use master/slave.
