To start with: turn off and unplug the computer. Open the case and install the stick of ram next slot to existing ram. Make sure both clips are fully latched, then power back up. If the bios sees the 256 then your done. If it doesn't, try the 256 by itself.

Make sure you line up the notches on the RAM with the notches on the slot. As Flanzig says, if the clips on both ends of the slot click in, you're okay, but I've seen too many people try to install RAM backwards and end up frying both the RAM and the motherboard.

Adding/removing memory does nothing to the data on the hard drive as long as all the power is removed from the system. The bios will automatically recognize the added memory.

If you can reach the tower from where it is, then only unplug the power cable. Don't worry about the VGA or speaker or any PS/2 or USB items. I have to unplug everything because I simply can't reach my tower where it is. I keep it inside the desk, and the cables are all too short to remove it while attached.

Be sure you don't have on fuzzy slippers or a wooly sweater, you don't want to create any static, but just to be sure, touch a metal part of the tower first before touching any circuts or boards.

The largest memory module should be in the front. Place the 256 where the 64 is now and move the 64 to the open DIMM. Don't put in upside down, and be sure the little clips completely latch.

You're now done. Turn on the computer and it will find the new ram, unless something went wrong. If so, then reply and tell us what happened.

Good work, that's nice to hearit worked out for you. So many people don't post results after all the ideas that are posted. You've taken your first steps in another world.
