DVD burner won't play/rip sound

Hi, I just built a PC with a NEC OEM DVD burner model number 3250A. All of my drivers are installed and the video plays, but not the sound. I tried to rip a DVD to my hard drive, but it only ripped the video files.

From what I understand you do not have to attach the audio calbes on the DVD drive to the mobo, because the audio is transferred digitally through the IDE cable.

What could be the problem?
