Unhappy question about cpu fans.

Hi all, I am building a computer for the first time and everything is going well except that I let the computer run for about 10 minutes (on and off) before noticing that I had lugged the cpu heatsink fan power into the wrong slot.(duh) I am letting it cool down now, having plugged it into the right slot according to my motherboard manual. Is it possible that in this short time of running the CPU w/out the fan that I could have damaged the cpu or the motherboard? I'm new at this and I just want to be careful. Thanks for your help.

Please be a bit more specific with what happened. Was your fan not running at all? And what do you have for a processor? I know that Tbirds can fry themselves very quickly with no cooling.

I have never heated up an AMD, but have heard that they can fry in no time. If it was an Intel, the heat sink may get scary hot, but it should still be OK.

Was your PC running OK (without freezing etc) before you noticed your error? If so you must be very lucky not to have done damage to the CPU (but I'm a Thunderbird user hehe).

I doubt it would have damaged the motherboard, and the CPU may be OK, just fire it up now you have the fan connected OK and see what happens.

All the best

If the heatsink was attached, but not the fan,the cpu probably survived.
The temps would get hot and eventually the computer would crash(about 5-10 minutes)
No damage would be caused to the motherboard, eventually the cpu would suffer.
As you ran it for a few minutes, all should be okay.
