Talking What PC would you build today?

Im new here and I recently posted on GF3 upgrade. I am also thinking about building a new PC. It would be my first build.

Im an Electronic Tech (US Navy) and now an Application Engineer in the semicon industry. Im hooked on PC specs and wanting to building my own. Did I mention I think this web-site is truley great!!

If you were to build a new PC today, what would you build-realistically?

Very interested in your views.

Best Regards, Brent in Mpls...

To answer that question, we would have to know

a) Your budget
b) what the PC will be used for
c) Your preference towards AMD or Intel (if there is one)

Myself. I would suggest AMD. But not for the same reasons that the rest of the amd lovers on here would. From my experience with AMD, you can get great performance for a more affordable price than with Intel cpus. Pair and amd chip with a motherboard with and Nforce chipset and you'll have a solid system.

Price maybe $1500 but probably not $3000

Dont want to go crazy, but want to be able to play top new games for some time. I would be open to Pentium or AMD.

Id like to hear what you would build for yourself-not for me.

Brent...

I personally would go for:

AMD 3500+ s939
DFI nforce 4 ultra motherboard
1024mb corsair RAM
nvidia 6800gt (would flash to ultra )
and a enlight psu 420-560watts
and then the usuall cd-rom and dvd burner,
possibly a soundblaster audigy 2 zs.

For the psu go for the Antex Neopower 480w. Also flashing a GT to an Ultra isn't always a great idea; it loosens the memory timings.

The one in blue lettering in my signature. However, I don't know if I'll go SLI. I don't know if it's worth it.

I wouls say something like the system you have in your sig. Only with the DFI nforce 4 ultra motherboard. Those hav dual PCI-E graphics capability instead of SLI.

Huh? I thought SLI was the only dual video card system available. There would be no point in dual slots if the cards don't work together. I'm partial to Asus too.

Actually not completely true. DFI made it so you can enable SLI on their Ultra board just by doing something with a pencil I think.

Also, two cards is good for multi-monitor (4) without SLi. I saw an article where they used a 6800Ultra and an x800 xt just to prove that they could.

Well I'm not going to be using four monitors so I don't think that will be a problem.
