new processor issue

i just installed a 3.0g ht in my new comp i just built, upgraded from 2.4g, but since i put the new processor in i havent been able to get it to run, when i turn it on it goes to that black, dos lookin screen that says something about start windows normally, start with last known good configuration settings, safe mode, any1 of those makes it freeze up.......im lost, help please........

system specs:msi 865pe neo2-v mobo
intel 3.0g ht p4 processor
2x512m corsair value series ram
msi 6600gt video card
80g maxtor hdd
samsung dvd-rom
samsung dvd burner
coolermaster jet 4 heatsink+fan
2-120mm case fans
500w xcase psu

What core is that processor - Northwood or Prescott? Just look at the label on the processor box and find whether it marks the processor as a "Pentium 4 3.0E" or a "Pentium 4 3.0C". If it is a Prescott Core Processor, a BIOS update may be necessary.

it says 'e'.........i also tried to reset the bios with the jumper on mobo

resetting the bios will not update it, you may need a bios update to support the prescott chip

i dont know what happened, i reformatted it and now its fine.....im glad i didnt sell my laptop cuz i built this....ended up gettin help from everywhere... this site usually gets to the point b4 some1 else, but thanx for the feedback, i probably need to do the bios thing too...ill look into that,,,,,,,thanx again guys
