Question Your work desk and cooling

My work desk has a built-in tower box with a hinged door that closes the tower out of sight (and reduces noise). I'm wondering what the effect will be on a high-end gaming machine in such a close space? There's plenty of room inside for airflow, and the back is open. I haven't had any problems whatsover with the 600Mhz
PC I'm currently running, but it's nowhere close to loaded like the one I've got sitting here almost ready to go.

Should these bad boys of speed need to be out in the open? What's your opinion?

Thanks.

well, i wouldn't put it in unless the front was open. The only time i would put a desktop in one of those things would be if it was only the frame. PCs usually collect more dust the closer to the ground they are. My PC collected enough dust to raise the CPU temp by 10C within 3 weeks when i put it on the floor but on my desk, it's fine and i rarely have to clean it now. higher end PCs push much more air then the old PCs did

How much space there is for your computer case doesn't matter as much as the airflow, you will want to make absolutely sure that the case thingamajig is not in any what restricting the airflow to your computer, if it is don't put it in there while running at max load for a while like any gaming computer will be(who wants to play on 640x480 when you can play on 1240x1080 or higher)

I agree...to keep your new PC cool you don't want to put it in a confined space that has limited air flow. You could experiment to see if that space is a problem by running the PC with the door closed and then with it open and monitor the temps. If the temps don't get too high and the PC runs stable with the door closed, then you're okay. But if the temps soar and the PC locks up, freezes, reboots or shuts down a lot then you can't run the PC with the door closed.

If you want to get fancy, drill a 120MM hole in the side of the desk and attach a 120mm fan to the comparment. You can then duct the airflow into your PC from the fan. Then the exhaust will be sent out the back of the case and subsequently out the back of the compartment.

I know, it's a lot of work, but it might be kind of a cool little mod (easy for me to say right. )

On a more serious note, I would have to agree that some testing would be in order if you want to keep the PC in the compartment. It might be fine, but it could potentially limit the airflow and cause some overheating.

Or I could cut a hole in the side of the Cherry desk and mount, oh I don't know, a ROOM FAN blowing into the compartment where the PC sits!!
That would be cool-er!
