What OS are you using? Most optical drives use just a generic driver in windows. Are you having an issue with the drive?

It would seem that I must be havoing some kind of 'issue'. As the Device mgr does not show the CD-RW, but shows my already installed DVD player.

I am using W2K, BTW.

I would check and make sure that it is jumpered properly. Is it on the same cable as the DVD drive? Could also be a bad ide cable.

Yes it is on the same cable as the DVD. It is jumpered as 'slave'. Is that correct?

If the other is jumpered as master and you are using a 40 pin ide cable, then yes. If you are using an 80 pin ide cable then they both need to be set as cable select.

To tell you the truth, ive come to notice that in an 80-pin situation, it doesn't matter if you use CS or specifically set the jumpers to master or slave. I admit that CS does make things easier, but for the sake of diagnosing, it wouldn't hurt to try both CS and the Master/Slave settings.

Thks for ya help. I re-positioned the jumper to CS, and seeig as I had to take the drive out the tower, to do this I also had to disconnect the IDE (40pin) cable. In doing this I did notice one of the pins on the drive somewhat bent, I corrected this and with the junper at CS, W2K foundthe drive NO problem!

Now all I have to do is find the software to record lectures, and then I guess the s/ware to burn my CD's...

Any suggestions?

Thks again

You could use the free program Audacity to record audio. Burn4Free is a good freeware burning program.
