I need to make this cheaper!!!
As of now this is the system I would be getting. There is no monitor because I plan on trying my luck at ebay. I'd like to know if there is anything i could change to drop the price without a big performance loss in games. I do plan on overclocking it also so if there is anything I could change there I'd like to know also. The total is $1562. Thanks

I'd hate to say this at the risk of influencing your initial decision, but you may want to look at the ATi Radeon X800 XL as an alternative solution - the only way I can put it is it is 60 USD less than the card you picked out. I generally don't say this since it is in every way, your personal preference.

I'm really open to both ATI and nvidia its just I've heard the 6800 is a better overclocker. I will only go AMD though. Thanks Kram, I'll try to find other things to lower also.
I like your suggestion Steve but i'd really like to but everything from one place. |

you can get the XP-120 for quite a bit cheaper at other E-Tailers. http://www.jab-tech.com/customer/pro...cat=169&page=1 that's more than 20 dollars off. Also take a look at the XP-90 full copper heatsink. http://www.jab-tech.com/customer/pro...4&cat=0&page=1 that's 10 dollars off what you had
http://www.jab-tech.com/customer/pro...&cat=52&page=1 5 dollars off. I would personally not buy a modstream but a powerstream 420 at least. Modstreams aren't all that great since they are based off of old PSU technology. edit- X800XLs are bad OCers because they lack low-K (so i've heard on rage3D). I would also get a fan to blow on your RAMchips as you will be putting a lot of volts through them to get them to OC well

loads of places u can save money..
- get a combined CDRW/DVDrom - cheaper case.. $125 is a lot for a lump of metal that holds your PC (even if it looks nice) - downgrade to an XP-90 (never realised the XP-120's were so expensive!) - cheaper fan? that one is nice but if ur desperate to save.. - get 2x this ram ($37 each) * - cheaper motherboard which still allows u to overclock well may be possible - save $30 by downgrading to a 3000+ (keep it winchester).. quite possible they will overclock the same amount - may be able to get a slightly cheaper PSU - may be some graphics cards u can get which can be modded into 6800GT performance? or downgrading slightly?.. i mean, its where the money is going.. double the price the next most expensive thing.. and of course, loosing/downgrading any of.. the speakers, keyboard, mouse, mouse mat, microphone thing would give u 0 performance loss in games.. if u have an OS then u could use that.. ..saving money isn't always pretty. *it wont do amazing memory speeds like the twinmos, but, u can use dividers to run the ram at lower speed than the 'htt' so it wont limit your CPU OC and it doesn't affect performance by that much. you could save some money and buy a different case. Lian Li are great cases but you could cut that in half and get a case that will work just as well, just wont have all the nice features.

I agree with the case issue. He can save around 40 dollars by buying his cooling setup on Jab-Tech. He actually should spend more on the PSU because his will not let him OC well. The ram chips he picked out are not normal value ram chips but winbond UTTs so they OC very well. I do agree with getting a 3000+ though. I've heard they OC roughly the same. |

"The ram chips he picked out are not normal value ram chips but winbond UTTs so they OC very well." yes i noticed that right after posting.. see * above..
"He actually should spend more on the PSU because his will not let him OC well".. i haven't been following the PSU market in detail lately but, even if that PSU sucks for OCing, there may well be one that doesn't which is cheaper? [if not OCZ] |

This is what I have come to now. I still need a power supply and I may go with that other heat sink. I unfortunately dont have an OS so I have to spend for that. Its at about 850 now.

I just relized, do you need the SLI motherboard? Are you planning to get another graphics card? Otherwise you could cut another $30 easy.

Staren, its not actually a SLI board, it just has 2 pci-16 slots but not SLI enabled.

You should probably get the pci-express version of the 6600GT because that mobo doesn't have agp slots. It's also $10 cheaper.

I didn't even realize I picked the AGP version, I just looked for an EVGA card.

Hmm... Didn't even think of that one. I guess an overclocked 6800 can run close to a GT if I get a good overclock on it.
