VIA/ATI game instability (only certain games)

Hi. I'm posting this _exact_ document on a wide variety of forums since I am completely stumped. If I'm posting this in a general troubleshooting/hardware/gaming forum it is because I do not know where the problem lies specifically. 3 weeks ago I bought a new computer (specs at the bottom of this document). I use it mainly for single-player gaming and routine stuff. However, it crashes randomly during certain games.

The crash:
- Game pauses for a moment
- Black screen appears
- I can still hear the game sound
- I can still play the game by using the keyboard/mouse
- My screen stays on, but pitch black
- I can alt-tab (the music stops when I alt-tab once, restarts if I alt-tab again) but the screen stays black the entire time.

Windows doesn't complain, VPU recover does not kick in. The crash forces me to reset or blind alt-F4 shutdown. The crash always happens in games, never in Windows itself. Some games run fine, others don't:

Morrowind, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth, Hitman 3 and Warhammer40k: Dawn of War crash repeatedly.
Demonstone, Armies of Exigo, World of Warcraft, Spellforce and Mechwarrior Mercenaries can be played for hours and never crash (note: when I say hours I mean 7+).
Doom 3, Chronicles of Riddick and Worms3d: Forts have never crashed but I haven't played them for more than 2 hours at a time.

(The games that crash do it identically) The crash sometimes occurs within 3 minutes of running the game, sometimes it takes hours. There have been times when I could play one of the crash-prone games for a good 4 to 5 hours before it crashes. This confuses me a lot :/ I can literally leave my pc on for an entire day and it'll stay stable. I can leave it in WoW and it's stable. But try and play Warhammer and it's only a matter of time...

What I've tried:

- Re-installing Windows: Tried the games on the cleanest install I could think of...no dice.
- Directx 9.0b and Directx 9.0c: Makes no difference.
- ATI drivers: those that came with box, 4.3 and 5.3 (with and without control panel/control center)
- Disabling onboard LAN & Sound: Makes no difference.
- Different VIA 4in1 drivers: v455 and v449. No difference.
- No background services/apps: I installed Windows, DirectX, Via drivers and screen drivers ONLY. Made no difference.
- Disabling AGP stuff: Fastwrite on/off, sizes (64,128,256) and speeds (4x, 8x). No difference.
- Checking system temperatures: All well within bounds, even ran some background monitors. Even tried playing with an open case in winter.
- Registry fix: I found a registry entry some people claimed helped (some DWORD I had to create). Didn't help.
- AGP voltage: changed from 1.5 to 1.7. Didn't help.
- Acceleration: Disabled it as far as I could so that the games still work. Didn't help.
- Graphic details: disabled all in-game and driver graphic function like Anti-aliasing, etc. Didn't help.
- Ran the games at 640x480 in 16bit with everything on the lowest. No dice.
- Tried a different hd: I am now running the games and my OS from a fresh new serial drive. Didn't work.
- Viruses and Ad-ware: Cleaned my system with updated Norton and Ad-Aware. Nothing.
- Reinstalled games: Nothing.
- Tried another screen and keyboard: nothing.
- Stuff I can't even remember right now

What I haven't tried:

- Taking out memory: If it was a memory problem, wouldn't it affect _every_ program?
- Running 3Dmark for hours to see if I can recreate the crash.
- Service Pack 2: will try tomorrow.

I would love to blame this on Via/ATI not meshing well (I've read dozens of posts in a handful of forums that support this) but the fact that certain games like WoW run like a dream at full detail for 14 hours at a time makes me wonder. I will try ANYTHING at this point no matter how lame, obvious or trivial it may seem to you.

I can't see anything wrong with your system, but since you have tried everything try to run your Windows XP in NTFS instaed of FAT32 and I didn't see that you mentioned trying some diferent Graphic card (borrowed from a friend let's say)!!!
