ahem - "sharing" "copies" of commercial software is piracy, which IS illegal. We have a strict policy about that in this forum.

Sorry GLC,
I was not aware of this and it was not my intentions to break any policies, I was only trying to get help and advised for building a PC, nothing more. Again my Apologies |

Tarmenion: My comment was directed at pa, not you. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Your best bet to keep everything legal and above board is to see if any of the vendors you are getting components from will sell you an "OEM" copy of Windows - it's half the price of the full retail version, expect to pay about $90 for 98SE. Try the vendor of the motherboard, processor, or hard drive, they are your best bet. OEM software can only legally be sold with the purchase of "qualifying" components (because it's to be sold with "purchase of a new system only"), and this is truly a gray area. You are certainly buying a new system - and you should be entitled to the purchase of an OEM operating system from *someone* here. Please note that you cannot get direct support from Microsoft on OEM software, if this makes a difference. |

glc,
i knew it was piracy.i do it all the time but i was unaware of the anti-piracy policys of "pcmech" so i will refrain from posting piracy related info. i was on ocuk and they sell OEM os`s without the purchase of hardware is this illegal? |

pa: Thanks for understanding. What OCUK is doing is technically illegal, but many vendors do it. Microsoft could theoretically cause problems for them if they wanted to.

Tarmenion,
The list looks good to me, Don't let any of these guys comments get you down and go for it. There is a first time for all of us to build our own and this time it's yours. Sure, you may need help on your first but you'll learn and later be helping others. Two years or so ago was my first and I'm still learning but it's great to learn something new at almost 50 years old. |

I again second Smoke24 about going for it. I came as a newbie about a year ago and have learned a great deal from this site and still have a great deal to learn. Don't be afraid to ask during your build. When your system is complete you'll fell really great about it, much more so, I believe, than any set-up you could buy from a store. Glad I could be of help.
