I'm hearing 560 USD for 4800+ retail.

Try $1001... $537 for the 4200+... now I know the AMD guys like to talk about Intel's high pricing.. I'm sure they'll be able to justify the $1001 as a great deal

Sounds like a deal to me - I guess whenever my Northwood shows its age (hopefully will be years down the road), Intel Pentium-D dual core will be my next step. Quick note - they are not at lower clockspeeds. Intel's strongpoint is the fast clockspeed.

AMD Athlon 64 XPensive 2. A reversal of Intel Extreme Edt.'s Nickname "Expensive Edt." It's all in the marketing HAL - 4800+ sounds like 4.8Ghz, which is "faster than 3.2Ghz from Intel".

i might find myself getting a 4200+.. thats still wicked fast. Above 4ghz performance. that will be amazing.

EDIT: im not sure until i get my hands on this chip how fast it will be. It might be a slower chip than its really rated. never know what amd is gona pull out of their butt.

The AMD dual cores at any speed are suppost to be mad fast at multi-tasking and editing. I heard they are in fact slower at gaming though.

If your gaming while video editing their not lol.

But anyways.. does anyone know when the athlon dual cores come out? And just to clarify things.. is it 1 chip. My friend tried to convince me that you install 2 separate chips.

Its one chip, with two cores in the package. I'm hearing June for Athlon dual cores, and they will be called Athlon X2.

Here is a news article that describes prices, dates and applications for the dual core AMD's. You can bet they will be expensive at first...but wait a few months.

That's just because they're clocked lower. The FX-55 is one core at 2.6 GHz, whereas the 4800+ is two cores at 2.2 GHz. With that said, in any multithreaded application, or while multitasking, the AMD dual-cores have an amazing speed boost. Intel dual cores don't get as big a boost, because HyperThreading has been offering a similar performance advantage to dual-core for a while now.

Definitely a plus if you've bought a Socket 939 board.
