The future of DDR-2

I am trying to find out whether I should put my money into the future of DDR-2. I have read articles that say it will die out, and I have read articles that say it is a necessary step into the future. So I really would like to know if it is an investment I would regret. The thing I am worried about is that if I buy a DDR-2 compatible mobo, and in a year it becomes obsolete, I would have to buy not only a new mobo, but also new ram to keep up (not to mention wasted money on buying the more expensive ram in the first place). On the flip side, if I get something DDR compatible, I am afraid of falling very quickly behind the times. I am trying to build a computer that I can keep for a few years without worrying about a mobo upgrade (it's much easier just to add a stick of ram). Ultimately, I think this will be my decision in whether or not I will choose AMD or Intel (AMD not being DDR-2 compatible as of yet), seeing as the numerous posts on this board show that there truly is little difference in the processors by themselves.

P.S. If it matters, I gear primarily towards gaming

I'm a believer in using proven technology. I'm nowhere near ready to jump on the DDR2 bandwagon yet. Don't let ram make your processor choice for you, look at the big picture. The only ram issue I'm a firm believer in is dual channel technology. Standard DDR is dirt cheap right now, I'd take advantage of that.

I understand that DDR has proven itself - I guess I'm just worried that I'll have to buy a whole new system in a year or two when something else comes out and DDR stops upgrading. It's a difficult time, I think, to make decisions when changes are in process.

well jus becus something new comes out and what u have becomes discontinued or obsolete doesn't mean u have to upgrade right then to have the latest. u only really need to upgrade when u feel that u need some more performance. so id say it doesn't matter that much
