i just upgraded this 1.7 celeron w/shuttle mb and i slaved the old win 98 fat 32 hdd so i could transfer data. it shows up in disc management but not in my computer. how do i go about making the old data compatible with ntfs [if thats the prob?] so i can copy it over.
thankx, ray. |

NTFS will read Fat32 just fine (Fat32 won't see NTFS however) so that's not the issue. Recheck your jumpers. If using an 80 wire cable, set both to Cable Select (CS). If using a 40 wire cable use Master/Slave jumpering. You might also try a different cable. This assumes both are on the same IDE cable connected to the Primary IDE on the motherboard.

i have both on the primary cable and both were on cable select at first and the slave didn't show in my computer. assuming that the settings were not quite right, i reset the slave to slave [not cs] left the primary hdd [on the end of cable 80 pin cable] at its cs setting and rebooted. when the slave still didn't show in my pc but did show in disc management, i got confused. ideas now??

They both have to be CS or one has to be Master and the other Slave. Can't mix the two. If CS didn't work, change the XP drive to Master and leave the 98 as slave.

nope, bad idea. still no go with either cs or m/s . heres where the plot thickens.....i tried to load zonealarm basic and got a generic host process for win 32 services error and my internet went down.
i removed za and my internet came back except now if i don't type the www it wont connect. could this be a problem with the hdds also???? |

I don't think so. How clean is your system? Have you scanned with Adaware, Spybot and a good antivirus lately? Maybe even a trip over to Trendmicro's Housecall. Also, can you restore the system to a point before the ZA install?

system is very clean with a printer and some pc scope software installed only.
i ran microsoft spyware and it found nothing. i ran trend and it found nothing. i tried to revert and it didn't help so i ran a xp repair reinst the mb drivers and it didn't help. i may just have to put the hdd in a usb enclosure to gain access. i can't image whats wrong?? |

Can you try the hard drives on separate IDE cables? Maybe disconnect the CD/DVD drives temporarily and make each a master on separate cables. If that doesn't work, it may be time to download the hard drive makers diagnostic utility and run a check on that 98 drive.

boy, was that stupid.
it appears that the hdd in question only seems to work in master mode. it will not work in any other position. i imagine i could have tried a usb enclosure but mine was tied up at the moment. i ended up booting with the win98 hdd and copying thru the network to another pc and then booting with the xp hdd and copying back. what a bunch of bs for what should have been a 5 minute job. live and learn. |

nope, its even worse!
NO extra hdd will work on this shuttle mb. i've tried a 40 gig as cable select and slave on the primary and cs and master on the secondary with no other device on secondary . i tried the same with a 80 gig and a 8.4 gig. i had a tough time getting a cdrw added onto the dvd rom on the secondary ide. xp took about two minutes each time i made a change and tried to access the hdwe in my computer searching for the changes. hours of my life wasted trying to do a routine upgrade on this incarnation from hell. tried downloading the newest 4 in 1 drivers and intallled them several times. no idea what is wrong, but i give up for now. |
