splat cd rom drives want to format

windows 98 , a cdrom and cd recorder , both appear in device manager as ok and both use to work ok. the recorder will record from the hard drive but neither will play a music or data disc origional or recorded. windows throws up the message disc not formatted then says disc cannot be formatted.
right click on the drive with disc in and it shows the capacity but says it is empty.
Tried all sorts but to no avail.
At my wits end.
Help please.

Exactly what have you tried so we don't suggest something you've already done.

Thanks for the reply. You threw me a curved ball there indeed what have I done? Main things are,
1/ Deleted both cd rom from device manager and restarted
2/ Tried altering the settings in properties (now left as both disconnected and auto insert checked)
3/ updated easy cd creator 5 basic then deleted it
4/ searched all sorts of databases for answers , looked into the registry but not altered anything
Seems a lot less than it feels like but thats about it.
Any suggestions
