Floppy Drive Problems

I'm an acting intern at an off broadway theater co. and since I know a little about computers, they have made me into their official tech support

Their Pc is having floppy drive problems. When you put in a disk, the drive light doesn't go on, you can't read or write to the disk, and no A drive is listed.
However, a floppy drive is listed by a brand name (sorry I forgot what it is) in Device Manager as working and they told me that someone already opened the pc and said all the wires we tight. That person also told them that they need to download a floppy driver from microsoft.

I never heard of a floppy driver. The PC is running Windows 2000 and it is a Pentium 500mhz.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Go to the Device Manager and Remove the Floppy Drive and Floppy Controller. Then reboot the machine and the os will find the hardware again and reinstall it. If that doesn't correct the problem try replacing the floppy and/or the floppy cable.

So, there's no floppy drivers for me to download right?
I don't want to permantly damage windows because the PC was donated to them and they don't have the windows CD.

Thanks for replying so fast.

Drivers are built in to the OS for floppies and CD/DVD drives.

You also try cleaning the drive. They used to sell floppy drive cleaning kits but I don't know if these are still available or not. If not, you could remove the drive from the computer, remove the top shell section and clean the heads with alcohol and q-tips.
