Case Standoffs?

I'm not sure of the name of the little pieces that hold your mobo away from the case side, but I'm wondering if I can install my mobo in a case without them.
I got an old unused generic case, pristine inside, and was going to install my new-used Asus P4PE (Yay! I'm getting closer to the modern side of technology!) However, neither the case nor mobo came with standouts/offs... The unused case has little rectangular holes where I imagine you place them, to support the mobo, but no included standoffs.
I took apart an older computer that I had on hand to take the standoffs from, but it didn;t have any! Just some bumps raised in the case side itself. Can I safely screw the P4PE mobo into these case bumps, or do I need to find some of the standouts that screw into the case? I won't be connecting power to it anytime soon, still have to accumlate the RAM and CPU (Anyone have a spare Socket 478 lying around? ) I just want to know, so I don't fry my newest piece of equipment.

Thanks,

If the case has the little bumps then you don't need standoffs. They act as standoffs.

If you don't have the little bumps, then you need standoffs. If you don't have any, I've gone to ebay and found people selling packages of them for just a couple bucks.

Yes, those "bumps" are the stand offs...but if there are any that don't line up to the mounting holes in your motherboard, you should cover them with electrical tape so they don't touch the underside of your motherboard and cause a short.
