For the external HDD housing, look at Apricorn and Bytecc.
Between the two hard drives you listed, get the second one. 8MB cache. Cricket

Housing:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155601 For the money, get this drive, 120gb and 8mb cache: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148022 Retail means it's in a pretty box with things you don't need such as installation software, screws, possibly an IDE cable, and an installation pamphlet. OEM is a bare drive, the housing comes with everything you need to install the drive in the housing. |

Umm.. guys... by default the drive cache is disabled when using an external enclosure which helps prevent data loss when you hot plug/disconnect the drive from the system. Sure, you can enable this cache again, but since an external drive is generally just used for storage, it's not of any real benefit... so I wouldn't be concerned about spending the extra for an 8MB cache drive.

Good point, but the 8mb drive is only 50 cents more than the 2mb drive. It would be nice to have the 8mb drive if you ever remove it from the housing and install it in a computer.
For another $1, here's a 2mb 160gb drive. THIS is the most storage for the buck. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148021 E just means enhanced. All parallel ATA drives (which is what these are) are EIDE these days. IDE stands for integrated drive electronics. Last edited by glc; 05-09-2005 at 08:52 AM. |

I'm just in the habit of recommending 8mb drives period. I didn't even think about externals and cache.

The 160gb is a 2mb cache, but that should be fine for the housing. The reason I recommend Seagate is the 5 year warranty.

with all ur helpful information i brough these from newegg.com
ENCLSR 3.5" USB2.0 AMS DS-2316B2BK - Retail (Qty=1,Price=$37.99) HD 120GB|SEAGATE ST3120026A 8mb % - OEM (Qty=1,Price=$81.00) ENCLSR 3.5" USB2.0 AMS DS-2316B2BK - Retail (Qty=1,Price=$37.99) HD 120GB|SEAGATE ST3120026A 8mb % - OEM (Qty=1,Price=$81.00) SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH WITH ALL YOUR USEFUL HELP (I WILL TRY TO DO THE SAME WHEN EVER I GET THE CHANCE TO SO THANKS AGAIN!) however, i am having trouble with this drive: when i plugged in the enclsoure and the hd ide in it, window xp quickly recognized and installed it. then i formatted the drive and used 100 gb to form 2 partitions and put about 2 gb of video on both partitions. but, then the next day, it stop working clearly: it said on USB mass storage device properties on the device status: this device cannot be started (code 10). i tried uninstalling then reinstalling, but it kept saying the same thing, no matter what, even if i installed the drivers from the cd (which i don't need to since i have window xp) and updated the driver from that cd but when i restarted my computer, it didn't turned back on. (so i had to roll back to to most recent confrigation that worked before, meaning uninstallling the drivers from the cd (never mind about that because thats not the problem.). i checked help and support on window xp, and tried all of the suggestions it told be, however that didn't seem to work either. therefore can you tell me whats the problem and how to fix the problem ( this device cannot be started (code 10). ) please let me know asap! thank you very much! |
