Can celeron 400 handle a dvd burner?
I'm giving away my old 400mhz, 256M, win98se rig to my nephew. I had an internal dvd player in it that works O.K. I would swap in instead a 4x dvd burner for him to make home-movie copies, but I don't know whether the rig could run it. The HD has plenty of gig's to spare, and the actual disc burning time would be unimportant. I did see 8x burner drive packaging that recommend 800mhz minimum. I think some burner software allows 1x or 2x burns. Will this CPU (with a clean bootup and no other apps running) allow a successful burn at all?

I doubt it.

Hmm, my old 2x400Mhz Xeon PII machine with 512MB on NT just about burns with a Pioneer DVR-107D. It's definitely my lucky day if it'll actually verify the data afterwards though.

If a 2x400 Xeon has a rough time, then a single 400 Celeron is prolly gonna choke to death.

It probably does not meet the minimum specifications for the drive. However, the cheapest new Dell on the market for around $300 or so can probably handle that.
