mesh
Good Idea or Bad Idea:
Build the case of a computer out of a metal mesh: something like the screen door that is paired with those huge sliding glass doors (if you know what i'm talking about). The holes in the mesh could be small enough to be able to block huge pieces of dust from coming in, but small pieces could go in and come out with ease. Obviously, it would get much more air flow going in and out. All the standard fans, etc. would be in it. |

That sounds like an interesting idea. I'm sure it could be done. I can't think of any real big problems with it. Just make a metal frame for all the parts and such and then for the enclosure use the mesh. Just be careful with any sort of liquid by it :-P Just my two-cents

I think you would have air flow problems because you wouldn't have the air moving in the case in a controlled fashon. In a solid case, the air flow is from the bottom front to the top rear which pulls the heat from the CPU and video card.

It could work fine. If you had the fans directly by the CPU and vidcard, then the machine would be OK most of the time unless the room temp is to high or the box is overclocked.
Another thought: Since the machine would be so exposed, the noise of the fans would be even louder. A watercooling solution would not only solve that problem as well as disperse heat better, but it would look pretty darn cool behind the mesh. Dogwelder |

you would have to have fans on the main parts like said, water cooling would be a thought. Since heat rises, it would not stick around in the case long as all.
I have a feeling it would get very dusty inside. Also, if you do this, you better make for certain the mesh is not lose, as if it touchs your video card or other areas, it might cause a short circuit effect, giving you an unequaled, one of a kind, one time event- grand light show in the case.

You certainly would not have to worry about mosquitos.
