Installed Hard Drive now Computer is running slow

I installed a 5400 20GB Western Digital into an older model HP computer. This replaced a quantum 3.5. Now when installing any software it takes much longer to install (10 minutes to install a game that once took about 2 minutes). Once installed, the program is sluggish. Could this be due to lack of memory? It has only 128 mb of memory.

I hope someone can help

Thanks, wafonseca

Might be memory related. How old is that 20Gb WD? If it's a used one, have you tested it to be sure it's good? Did you defrag after the initial installation? And what are the rest of your system specs?

Go to device manager and check if the primary IDE channel is using DMA or PIO mode. If it is PIO, that is your problem. I had the same problem. If it is, then let me know and ill tell you how to fix it.

Re: Panama Red

The hard drive is brand new out the box, I did format it, operating system installed perfectly, you can run through windows with no problem, the problem only comes in once you try to install software. It's running windows 98 with 128 MB of memory and a 20 GB hard drive and P2 Processor.

If it's Windows 98, the DMA setting is in the properties of the drive, not the controller.
