Ready To RMA but Now Drive Tests Good?
I have an IBM/Hitachi 60gb Deskstar that squeaks, freezes and crashes after it gets hot. Then when I go to reboot it I get a message that says "A SMART error has been detected." Then it won't reboot again until it cools off for several hours. I ran the factory drive fitness test "advanced test" and it said “Failure Code 0x72 Defective SMART FAILURE.” So I found out that I still have a little time left on the warranty and I got an RMA number from Hitachi from their website's automated response.
Then last night I wiped out the HDD writing all zeros to it with Darik’s Boot and Nuke so I would not leave any personal info like my credit card numbers or anything on it. Now today I ran the factory Drive Fitness again just to make sure but now it tests as good. Do you think Hitachi will still replace the drive for me? The freezing after it gets hot problem is still there. Since you got a RMA#, send it back.

agreed, once a hard drive starts to fail, never trust it again.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to replace it for sure. I am trying to ask if you think the manufacturer will honor the warranty if the drive has to get real hot before it fails? I hope they don't just do a quick test when the drive is cold then say there is nothing wrong with it and send it back to me.

As long as they get the item with the RMA number, I don't think you'll have any problems.
