Can't get usb 2 external hard drive to work

Hi,
I have just acquired an X's drive II which is an external hard drive with a built in digital image card reader. This allows me to download images from my camera's card into a hard disk when I am "on the road". When I get back home I download the images into my PC:
AMD Athlon XP, 1615 MHz (12.5 x 129) 1900+
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-7VKML(-P) (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 2 DIMM, Audio,
Video, LAN)
Windows XP Home SP1

Having used the X's for a while using the PCs original usb 1.0 port I was unhappy with the download speed and decided to upgrade to usb 2.0 with a usb 2.0 pci card (sunix usb4212v with AVI chipset). Having installed the card windows XP successfully detected new hardware and installed drivers.

I can successfully get data from the camera card into the X's drive, but when attempting to download to the PC I get a message that file CRW0902.crw cannot be found. On looking at the data some of it has been successfully transferred but everything from CRW0902.crw on has not.

I can successfully download the data from the X's drive if I use the PCs original usb 1.0 port.

I don't have another usb 2.0 device to try. I have checked both the windows and driverguide.com web sites and they show that the XP driver is up to date. The manufacturer's web site shows no driver for windows XP (presumably because the windows built in driver is OK).

I need to find out if I have a problem with the X's drive, the PCI Card or the PC set up.

Any suggestions?

maybe i just missed it in your post but is the external drive itself a usb2 device
