Stuck CPU

A trick getting the HS off my mobo but pried up the corners and off it came,. The cpu is stuck to the bottom of it and can't figure why the little lever on the board is still locked in place - I thought that held the cpu in place?? How did that happen, and how do I get the stuck cpu off the hs?

It happened because you forced the heatsink off without twisting it to break the bond between the thermal pad and the CPU first. Set the thing on the table with the fan down, CPU up, and carefully wedge and twist a plastic tool in between the CPU and heatsink.

Since the lever was still down, any chanced I screwed or stripped the whatever grabs the pins? Luckily this isn't one I'm upgrading.

The socket is probably still okay.

Don't worry about it, this is actually quite common with socketed CPU's. This is one of the reasons Intel chose LGA, it prevents the CPU coming out with the heatsink.

Nice, but what if one simply left the cpu stuck to the hs and stuck it back into the socket? What are the odds all 478 pins hit their hole perfectly and not get bent when he locks down the 2 hs levers?

With the ZIF lever in the up position, I don't think you can get the CPU in the socket if the heatsink is still stuck to it...you won't be able to lock and latch the ZIF lever because the heatsink will be in the way.

With the ZIF lever in the down position I know you won't be able to get the CPU into the socket since the holes are blocked by the pin locking mechanism.

I think you gotta get the CPU and heatsink separated.
