Heatsink Recommendation

I have tried everything I can think of to reduce my CPU temps but nothing has worked so far.

My Previous Post

Now, I am thinking it might be my heatsink so I am looking to replace it.

Should I just replace the fan on the heatsink? Or should I replace the whole HSF combo?

Is there a good heatsink any of you can recommend? My 3.0 ghz Pentium 4 is a socket 478 and is not overclocked. I want a good HSF that has a good cooling/noise ratio. I just need something that can cool my CPU under intense gaming without sounding like a vacuum cleaner.

Did you try the tips recommened in the prior post? Cricket mentions that those temps were OK, and if it were an AMD system, I wouldn't worry much, either.

My system is a 478 socket P4, not AMD. I tried all the tips in the previous post. I cleaned the heatsink fins and case for dust.

My idle temps are now near 50 C. The idle temp isn't so bad but when I play games, the CPU fan turns up to near 4500 RPM and I sometimes get random shutdowns/restarts..which is a problem.

The random reboots might have nothing to do with the CPU temp. P4s will throttle themselves back to reduce temps if they get too hot.

The rebooting problem could be the power supply, the video card, RAM or even the games itself (bad code).

What brand power supply are you using?

Have you tested the RAM with a memory tester yet?

Do you have another video card you can swap in?

Do you have any case fans installed?

Thanks for all the help by the way.

My power supply is a 350 watt Enermax.
I've been using a non-overclocked 9800 for 1.5 years without any problems.

As for the memory... I have two pairs of 512mb Corsair PC3200

This problem hasn't occurred until recently. I've had the PC for about 1.5 years and it is filled with quality parts. I am starting to think if the ambient temps have anything to do with it?
Since it's June now, my room is about 70 C...

Anyways, where/how can I test my memory? I've heard of memtest, but am unsure how to use it.

www.memtest.org

Download - Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win)

Unzip it, read the readme.
