chipset drivers??????
my sister tried to do some comp. work herself and when she removed a sound card to replace it with another she lost the ability to use her cdrom drives...it shows that the drivers are corrupt or missing........I think i need to install the drivers for the chipset to get things working again.....does this sound like a reasonable thing to do?
not only did she lose cdrom drivers but also for modem, audio, and others. which is why im thinging chipset drivers.. any input would be apperciated kevin |

What is the system's full specs? It does sound like a chipset driver corruption...

Make a system restore point right now, and then go ahead and try the chipset drivers. If the system is still under warranty, give Gateway a call as well.

I would think you'd want to download the drivers from Gateway rather than from Via.

It's not about warranty. Some prebuilt machines, like Gateway, use specialist drivers or bios's for their comps. Not sure what you mean by upgraded. Newer OS or new hardware?

Seems to me the chipset drivers that come with a new motherboard are not OS specific. I believe they are only hardware specific. That would mean you'd still be better off with the Gateway chipset drivers (assuming they are available) than with the Via drivers. I'm not positive tho so see if someone else knows for sure. Don't want to give ya bad info.

Why don't you just do a system restore back to a point when they were still working?

If you are trying to use XP on a name brand computer that came with an older OS, it's always a good idea to upgrade to the most recent bios.
Before you install chipset drivers, you need to know the northbridge - the vt82c686b is the southbridge. If it's a Via northbridge, go ahead and install the Via Hyperions. It may not be a Via northbridge - AMD themselves put out a chipset with an AMD northbridge and a Via southbridge. If you could post the exact model Gateway computer, this would help a lot. |
