Is There a Motherboard with 4 DDR2 Slots & an 8X AGP Port
I am looking at upgrading my main system. I basicly use it for gaming. Here are the spects:
Intel P4 3.2GHz Processor (Northwood) 2 GB 3200 DDR Memory (1GB Corsair and 1GB PDP Sys)(Dual Channel) Asus P4P800-E Deluxe Motherboard Demon 2 Case (Silver & Blue) ATI All-in-Wonder 9800 (w/fan blowing outside the case) 80GB, 160GB, & 250GB Hard Drives 8X DVD+-RW, 4X DVD+-RW, & 48X CD-RW Opticle Drives Matching (w/ the case) Silver Floppy Drive 11 Fans (4 case, 2 power supply, 1 video card, 1 processor, 1 under video card, 2 on memory)(Keeps my case nice and cool! ![]() I want to upgrade my processor to one of the Intel dual core chip, so I have to have a MB that will accept a 775pin processor. And I want to upgrade my video card to ATI All-in-Wonder X800XT, which is only made for AGP, so, I need an 8X AGP port as well. I know the case I want to upgrade to. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=IC-TR-N&cat=CAS Any sugestions on upgrading? Now the question, Can I get 4 slots for DDR2 mem for a MB that has AGP? If not, would a timing of 2-2-2-5 be good for new DDR chips? Be sure to post any comments you have. Thanks |

The only mobo's I can come up with using Newegg's configurator that combines AGP & DDR2 offers only 2 x DDR2 slots. And all three of them are made by ECS - not a recommended manufacturer. Why not change your vid card choice to PCI-E? That's the direction the technology is going at the moment.

The new motherboards for the dual core chips aren't really out yet. The 915/925 chipsets aren't compatible. Hold tight for a while, and I'm betting you will *have* to go PCI-E. I'd expect an 800 series AIW for PCI-E to be available pretty soon.

I was originally planning on waiting, but I build PCs to sell, and I know someone who wants to buy my system with not every piece though. May as well use this chance to upgrade.
Is there an All-in-Wonder card, better than my 9800, that is PCI-E? At one point I thought there was a AIW X800 XT for PCI-E. Am I mistaken? |

The only PCI-E AIW so far is the X600 Pro. It doesn't game quite as well as a 9800. If you want to cobble up an upgrade with a high power socket 775 chip like the 6xx series and keep the 9800 AIW, look at the Asus P5P800. This takes standard DDR, it's a 865PE, modified version of what you have now for 775.

I have seen MB that are capable of DDR and DDR2 with AGP. Would it be a good idea to get DDR2 mem instead of my DDR 3200? Here is a link to one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135173

Another viable option may be to get a regular PCI-Express graphics card and purchase a PCI VIVO card. That way, you have the AIW functions, but you get to pick which PCI-Express graphics card you want.

Why didn't I think of that?!?!?!?
That might be just what I need to do.However, I am still wondering about the memory. Last edited by SpikiestDog2; 06-09-2005 at 07:22 PM. |

I wouldn't buy an ECS board if they were the last manufacturer left on the planet. Asus has some dual memory (DDR, DDR2) capable PCI-E only boards, but just like the dual SDRAM/DDR boards, you can only use one or the other, no mixing. There really isn't a big advantage to DDR2 yet, the latencies are very high.
Good idea, kram - one of the Hauppauge cards would be very nice. |

I have an old Hauppauge card, paid $120 for it 5 years ago. It is just a piece of junk. I would get the ATI HD TV card. Would that be a good choice of card?

Well, Reboot is very video savvy, and he's saying that the new Hauppauge cards make ATI's look like crap. Check out some threads in the multimedia forum.
