comp started making a funny noise
I built a comp about 3 months ago with an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo that has ran perfectly. It still does run fine, but it has recently started making an odd noise. I have traced the noise to the heatsink over the nForce 4 chip. It sounds like the fan is struggling, it is sort of a whirring noise that sounds especially weird right when I start up or shut down.
I looked at the fan itself, and there's nothing blocking its rotation, and it appears to be securely fastened to the mobo. I spun it with my finger with the power off and it seemed like there was nothing wrong with it at all. But when I unplug the power cord to the heatsink, the noise immediately ends. Now it has gotten a lot hotter here recently and temps inside my case have gone up about 5-7 degrees C. I'm not sure if that has something to do with it or not...if the fan is working harder and that's why it's making more noise or what. To me the noise just doesn't sound right. Does anyone know anything else that could cause this or any way to fix it? |

If it is a cheaper fan, it could be failing due to a bad bushing. Best to get a new fan.

Maybe contact Asus Tech support to see if they'll give you a free replacement. That board should be covered with a 3 year warranty.

More than likely it just the fan going bad, it happens quite often especialy if its a ball bearing fan, some bearings go out easily, the which are the the things wraped in wire I think can be fix with some luck and alot of patience just by simply re-wrapping it in wire atleast it worked for my friend but I reccomend buying another fan

I wasnt telling him that he should just fix it instead of getting a new one, I just said that you could fix so that others would know it was possible if theirs wasnt under warranty, but its really not worth the time re-wrapping the fan, especialy how cheap fans are now. but definatly call tech support and get a new one.

This is a known issue with the A8N's and Asus has the procedure in place for getting a replacement. If you have to wait, give them a break, they may be having a problem keeping the replacements in stock.
