Would be helpful to know which laptop you have

More than likly it's a standard 2½ drive that will fit in most laptops that use 2½ drives.

i want to take the hdd from a sony vaio pcg-r505el to put in a dell inspiron 5100. would this work?

Probably. Most laptops these days use 9.5mm thick drives. 12.7mm drives might work, depends on the carrier each one uses. A 9.5mm drive will fit in a 12.7mm carrier.

And not every laptop has a removable harddrive bay. Many are built-in.
