Reformat from External CD/DVD drive

I was wondering if I can reformat my notebook pc using an external usb 2.0 dvd/cd drive. The main cd drive on my notebook pc is busted, so lately I've been relying on the external.
Now after all the precautions I've been taking (antivirus, antispyware) my laptop's been encountering the blue screen (crash) at least twice a day when I use my laptop. I know for sure I'm not running memory intensive programs on my computer. I have 768mb of Ram installed.
So at the moment I'm considering to reformat my computer. Reformatting my computer requires that I use the 5 part cd set required to restore my computer to factory presets.
I really need to know soon. Thanx in advance.

I believe the restore set is only compatible with the internal drive - but if it will boot off the USB it *might* work. All you can do is try it.

If you can give us the error message on the bluescreen, we might be able to find a fix for you, to avoid a reformat.
