What brand and model is the laptop and what size hard drive is in there now? If it's from the 90's, it very likely has a bios hard drive size limitation, it may be as low as 8gb. If you are lucky, it may take up to 32gb.
The ATA speeds are a nonissue, everything there is backwards compatible. |

Between Toshiba and Samsung, flip a coin. Neither one is the most reliable drive in the world. The Toshiba has a better warranty, the Samsung has more cache and is faster.
By the way, there's no guarantee that a 30gb drive will work, I'm *assuming* it will because it currently has a 10gb. Apricorn's hard drive upgrade configurator for laptops only lists a 20gb drive for that model, but that may be because they don't carry any 30gb drives. They specifically say that 40, 60, 80, and 100 is N/A. 32gb is a very common bios limitation, it's the next step after 8gb. |
