I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 Laptop with a IBM Travelstar HD that I'm trying to format. I downloaded the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test and ran all the test that is available.
Advanced test and the results: IC25N010ATDA04-0 Operation completed successfully Disposition code 0X00 Exerciser, ran 1 loop and the results: IC25N010ATDA04-0 Operation completed successfully Disposition code 0X00 Erase disk and the results: IC25N010ATDA04-0 Operation completed successfully Disposition code 0X00 After the fitness test I put the Operating System "Reinstallation CD WMe" CD in computer and booted computer from CD. Start up from CD and Microsoft Windows Me setup screen comes up. To continue with setup, press enter. Gives 2 options: Configure unallocated disk space (Recommended) Exit setup I selected the 1st one. Gives 2 more options: No, do not use large disk support Yes, use enable large disk support I selected the second one Rebooted system. Booted from CD When the Microsoft Windows Me Setup screen comes up it tries to format the HD. Then an error comes up saying: Setup cannot install Windows Me on your computer. An error was detected while formatting your primary hard drive partition. Press enter to quit setup. Why did the Drive fitness Test not show no errors and then I can't format the HD ? Is there a problem with the size of the partition ? I original HD was Model # DJSA-210 and the replacement was an IC25N010ATDA04-0 and both drives are the same size, 10 GB. Any help would be appreciated. Alvin

It looks to me like your restore disk does not like how you harddrive is formated. This is the method that worked for me with a desktop Hitachi/IBM deskstar 60gb drive and Windows XP:
Write all zeros to the hard drive with Darik's Boot & Nuke (quick method) download free at http://dban.sourceforge.net, then boot to a Win98 boot disc (flopy) you can find one to download on the internet if you don't have one, chose support with CD ROM, type FDISK, chose "enable large disk," then after reboot type FORMAT C:, then boot to the Windows restore disc and chose "leave current file system intact". |

You can write zeros with the Hitachi DFT, no need to download anything else.
