USB Mouse stops working

Evening all

I'm fixing a machine for a friend, it was so packed full of junk I decided to format the drive and start afresh

One problem: The USB mouse I've plugged in stops working after maybe 10 minutes (the time varies). The light goes off and just seems like the slot has given up the ghost. Plugging into the other slot doesn't help, the mouse is dead until I reboot

Matsonic MS8137C with VIA chipset. Could this be something to do with dodgy USB drivers? I'm sure back in the day I've heard loads of moans about VIA 4 in 1s..?

Cheers
Jim

I've talked to too many people with usb rodent headaches. My advice is to always use the adapter to plug in to the PS/2 mouse port. Wish I could offer more help, Jim. Have you looked in Device Manager after it is up and running to see if the usb's are properly recognized?

Hey thanks for the message, hope you're doing alright (long time no see)

I'm not so much worried about the mouse itself, it works fine on my other machine. I'm more worried about the USB ports being shafted, as they've got a USB broadband modem and I don't want that dropping out every 10 minutes!

I've plugged in a PS/2 mouse for now though, cheers

OK, strange things are happening

When I plug in a USB device such as my flash drive it appears, but the files I copy from it are corrupt

If I try and run files from the device the computer reboots! (unless I quickly pull out the device once the machine freezes, in which case it is revived)

Can anybody hazard a guess whether this is hardware or driver failure? This will determine my course of action! I have installed the most recent VIA USB drivers

I've decided to get a USB Addon card for it, see if that fixes anything

Would these run off the VIA drivers or from drivers supplied with the card? If it would run off 3rd party drivers it'd be much better

Depends what chipset the card uses. You could uninstall the USB root hubs and controllers and disable the onboard USB in the bios.

I got the Addon card, it had a VIA chip on it

Same problem, computer reboots if I try to run files from a usb drive, mouse stops working after a while, files are corrupt if I copy them from USB

I was thinking new motherboard ,just to get rid of the VIA chipset. But what on earth could be the problem ?

Send a message via ICQ to MADMAC`
You don't say which OS you are using, but there have been problems with USB particularly VIA chipsets since day one,
If the OS is Windows XP. then service pack one should have fixed the problem. If SP1 is already installed then visit here for a fix

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307271

if OS is MS 2000
Then here for a fix.

If OS 98 SE or Millenium
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;240075

sorry cannot be more precise!

Sorry I hadn't posted for ages so had forgotten to give all of the specs etc (out pr practice), it was WinXP
