16X DVD burner takes 24 mins to burn dvd
Hello
My dvd burner in a newly built pc takes 24mins to burn a DVD. I use Nero Ultra 6.6, chose 8x option with TDK 8x media. Dvd Burner is From Mad Dog (6-1 burner, sorry don't remember the model number). PC spec is P4 3.2ghz, Asus P4P800e-Deluxe, Windows 2000 SP4. The cache meter keeps flipping from 98% to 7% and back and forth. I don't know if this is a driver issue or if the hardware setting are off. The dvd-rw drive is the only device connected to the Secondary IDE and the jumper is set to device being primary. Primary IDE has a 120GB HD and a zip drive connected. I reinstalled the drivers that came with the motherboard, no difference. I also checked the ASUS website and found no updates for the IDE controller. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks ryan21
I added the same model to my old Dell 4300 and it takes alot less time to burn a dvd. 12x in 7-8 mins, 8x in about 10 mins. The buffer in nero stays around 95-98% throughout the burn process in the dell machine. The 24mins time seems like the machine is only burning a little faster than 2x. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Windows 2000 does not have DMA mode enabled by default. But you need to have it enabled to get the correct burn time.
Rightclick on "My Computer", select Properties, go into the Device Manager, and then get into the properties of the IDE Channel where the DVD burner is connected to. The currenc transfer mode will certainly be PIO Mode, and you need to change the transfer mode to "DMA, if available". Best thing would be to change that for all IDE devices. After a reboot check it again, the current transfer mode should be a DMA mode (probably UDMA 2 for the DVD burner). Now the burning time should be normal, around 6 minutes to burn a single layer DVD at 16x. RJ
