MOBO upgrade using same cpu

upgrading mobo s478 style but keeping existing p4 1.9 gh chip. Not sure of how to put cpu into new mobo. When pulled from old mobo the large heat sink was still attached. The new mobo has the same fan heatsink set up but how do i fit the chip in the zif slot with the heat sink still attached?

Any suggestions

going from a asua p4te to a asus p4p800se

I think it's best to remove the CPU from the heatsink, otherwise it is too easy to not be able to see what you are doing and bend the pins. When I had to do this recently, I flipped the CPU/heatsink upside down with the CPU pins sticking up, then very gently twisted the CPU back and forth until the bond with the heatsink was broken.

Thanks - will there still be heatsink residue and can it be cleaned?

Yes, there will be thermal paste or pad residue on the CPU and heatsink. According to the Arctic Silver instructions, the best way to clean it off is to use "xylene based cleaner, (Goof Off and some carburetor cleaners) acetone, mineral spirits, or high-purity isopropyl alcohol."

Removing the HS is definetely your best bet like doctorgonzo said.

A friend of mine swapped his board when it died for a replacement of the same kind. he took out the heatsink with the cpu still stuck on the bottom, left it in an antistatic bag for a couple days, then just stuck it right back in. of course you can almost see NOTHING this way, especially if you have a larger heatsink, and as doctor said its very easy to bend those pins. I wouldn't recommend this.

Thanks for your help, managed to gently pry the cpu from the heat sink and cleaned them up, put new thermal paste on and then put them on the new board with no problems, everthing works
