RAM issue? (BSOD) Please help...

I'm having an issue with a build I just put together. I upgraded an existing set up a friend had given me. Here's what I know...

AMD Thunderbird (?) CPU 1.4 Ghz
Shuttle AK31v2 Mobo

I just added:
GeForce fx5200 card (cheap)
160 GB Western Digital HD
Dell Ultrasharp 17in FP LCD
1 GB (2x 512mb) Corsair Value-Select PC2100 RAM

The machine had what I thought to be 2 256MB Apacer PC2100 sticks that were running fine. However, when I got everything installed and was running Neverwinter Nights I kept getting the BSOD with a physical memory dump.

I've sinced cleaned the registry, tested the RAM with the XP ramtest deal, checked the CPU (it's running at around 59 degrees) and ran everything else i could think of.

This morning, however, I ran PCWizard and it showed the old Apacer RAM as PC2300 (it does not say this on the stick)! The manual for the mobo says it supports PC1600 and PC2100, but the system was running fine before the upgrades.

Would the mix-match of the RAM be causing the BSOD? The computer runs fine for a while and just dumps out randomly, but especially when I'm playing NWN. Some people say mixing is fine, but I've seen others that say it's not.

What else could the issue be, I wonder? Are there any other dignostics I could run to find out what the issue could be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could heat be doing this? You say it's at 59 degrees; is this idle or under load? The fact that it happens while playing a game might mean heat is an issue.

Also, did you reformat/reinstall when you put the new hardware in?

58-59 is after it crashed. I went back in and checked.

The drive was formatted and xp was reinstalled after I put it all back together.

59C is about normal for that processor. T-birds are known to run very hot. have you been to www.memtest86.org and downloaded their RAM testing utility?

No... I used some win xp mem test deal, which really didn't tell me much.

memtest runs from a command prompt as soon as you boot the PC. youll know right away if youre getting any errors or not. download it, its free.

Important information about your system
Supports 6 banks up to 3 GB DRAMs for Unbuffered DDR SDRAM modules.

You are trying to use four double banked modules. That's 8 banks, not supported. One of your modules has to go. I'd toss both 256mb sticks and get one 512 that matches the other 2 if you want 1.5 gigs.

Yeah... in case you couldn't tell, I'm new at this. Trying to teach yourself this stuff is a daunting task.

Anyhow, I pulled the PC2300 sticks (labeled PC2100) and was able to run NWN for about an hour without crashing. Getting some weird pauses when running some applications yet, but no BSOD. I'm just going to take your advice and get another Corsair 512 to match the existing ones.

Hopefully this solves it. Thank you so much.
