You can get them, but they're External UPS supplies. You can get those up to 4000w that i've seen. You can get an 850w single internal PSU

The Turbo-Cool 850 SSI from PCP&C has a 950W peak output..pretty dam close to 1000W.

This kind of power is not neccesary at all for 99.5% of todays systems.

Peak outputs are always quite a bit higher than the real (effective) outputs though. A single PSU on 1000w would probably overheat without loud fans or water cooling.

EDIT: Thats the 850w PSU I was on about anyway

If you're not using the 1000w why waste money on an overpowered unit?

Sad to say this, but for many its the attraction of putting 850W PCP&C PSU in their signature. In other words, bragging rights.

The day we start needing 1000W of constant power is the day they start giving us 24 processor super computers with a total of 36GHZ of processors and 12GB of memory for $900.

Hehe, yeah and imagine our power bills if we use the full extent of that power!

It won't be too long before that kind of power is needed for the fastest gaming computers. Seems bizarre, but its not unrealistic at the rate things are going.

Does anyone actually do that? I've got a 40GB HDD and a 400w 'ColorsIT' PSU in my sig lol (I saved money on a lot of things to get my 3.0ghz CPU). Although I have got 2x256mb Kingston PC4000 RAM in there where as actually only one of them is working at the mo (the other one's defective).

What do you mean "rice" out their computers as some do to their cars?

Of course, putting in a huge, inappropriate, unnecessary PSU is no different than putting on a huge, inappropriate, unnecessary cap to their exhaust. You can only say that I have the loudest car or biggest PSU.

With some of the mods people do, 1000W could be used somehow. How many does it take to fire up a slurpee machine? (Man, I have to see that.)

A PC that can make slurpies? How about toast Pop-Tarts? Maybe even a little toaster oven for little pizzas? Imagine the cooling for that.

If you can get an adapter from molex-standard (plug) you could have an Internal PC toaster. That would be useful, I hate having to go all the way from my room to the kitchen just because i'm hungry...

I reckon the first real requirement for 1kW will be in computers heading towards virtual reality, where the hardware inputs require more than a little current. However, I'm no expert, not even close. I'd hope there's no processor/memory/HDD/video card ensemble envisionable that alone would require 1kW, but I suppose an adaptation of Moore's Law comes in to play here

It will happen. How many times in the past did we hear "Nobody will ever need 1 Gig of RAM" or "How could one ever possibly need a 10 Gig hard drive?"

As far as bragging rights go. I bought my 850 watt PSU because I had previously bought a Thermaltake 680 watt PSU which could not run two 6800 Ultra's and I was not interested in buying a second PSU which could not run them either. So I bought the best. I could afford the best. I really don't care if anyone thinks I am bragging...I know my PSU will work and I know its good for the future. This was when Nvidia only had 4 PSU's approved for SLI.

Also think of the power bills for a 1000w PSU when its at full pelt. Microwaves only use 850w maximum! Top end video cards use near enough 100w now, and workstation ones can use even more.

Some high-end workstations may need that much. Think about it... up to 4 gigs of ram, dual processors (or up to 8 with new technology), dual video cards, 4-5 high speed hard drives, it all adds up. I've seen people use 2 power supplies... Newegg even sells a server case with 2 500W power supplies, but they may be 550s.
