Problems with DVD-ROM
I have a Sony DVD-ROM, model DDU1612. If I put any type of disk in it, music cd, data cd, DVD, whatever, it wil spin for a while and the light comes on, then my entire system locks up and I have to reset. In device properties, it shows as working properly, and diagnostics turned up no problems either. I looked for driver updates but found none. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help, JH

This just started happening or is it a new replacement drive?
Have you checked Event Viewer ?

I built the pc last year, haven't used the drive very much, it started freezing up the system maybe the 3rd time I used it. I did get it to play a DVD today after a few resets, but it still froze up after a while, but I didn't have to reset the system, just end task. I ran all the compatibility tests before that and everything was fine. The player program is PowerDVD if that means anything.

well the problem is probably that you have a sony.
Haha just playin' I had the same problem with my old Samsung DVD drive too. I couldn't find a solution on the software side, there was something amis within the drive. I tossed it and purchased a new one. They dirt cheap now anyway, a new one is probably your best bet. |

It's true that they're cheap but it's annoying to buy a new part only to find that the problem is elsewhere.
What shows up in Event Viewer? |

You need to get to Device Manager. Right click on My Computer go to Properties. Select Hardware and go to Device Manager. Select the drives, right click to property. Select the Advanced tab. To me, it sounds like a defective drive more than disabled DMA - disabled DMA should slow the drive down more than make it crash....?
