DIY iPod Repairs

I recently damaged the screen of my G4 20GB iPod and am at a loss for what to do. I don't really want to send my iPod into some internet company for $145 when I have a feeling there's a way to repair it myself. I've always been pretty handy so I was hoping I might save money that way. Has anyone ever successfully purchased an iPod screen online and replaced it without damaging the iPod itself? Does anyone have any directions for attempting such a project? Thanks.
