The SATA controller on that board is the Intel ICH6R, if that helps with your driver choice.

If you are booting from Windows already installed on the IDE drive, just hook up the new drive, boot into Windows, and the new drive should be recognized in Disk Management. Right click on it, partition and format it.

If you are trying to install Windows on the new SATA drive, disconnect the IDE drive first and boot with the Windows CD. As long as the SATA controller is properly configured in the BIOS and you are not using RAID, a driver floppy will not be required for Windows XP.

ob1, he is asking how to configure the controller in the bios, not how to connect the drive.

That's what the motherboard manual is for, Jay. Integrated peripherals, OnChip IDE Device - set On-Chip Serial ATA to Enhanced and SATA Mode to IDE. Plug your SATA drive into the SATA1 connector. It should show up as IDE Channel 2 Master.

what kind of hard drive is it? run a diagnostic test on the drive

go to the manufacturer's website and look there for the diagnostic tool, or you can use the ubcd. it has a lot of hard drive diag tools from basically all hard drive manufacturers.

Or go to the Maxtor website and download Powermax. It will run from a floppy.
