Unhappy Keyboard and Mouse Do Nothing

On System 3 in my signature, I can't get the keyboard and mouse to work. I am using a wireless keyboard and mouse that connect with USB to PS/2 adapters. When I boot the computer, Windows 98 tells me that there is no mouse attached, click OK. I can't click it or hit Enter, as neither peripheral does anything.

I tried a wired mouse, still with adapter, and a wired keyboard, with just ps/2, and neither of them work either.

I also tried using just USB, but no luck.

The motherboard is still giving them power though, as the keyboard lights up and so do the optical mice.

I thought it might be a Windows problem, but I cannot even get into the BIOS when I turn the machine on.

Are my PS/2 Ports fried? Is there any way I can get this machine back in working order?

TIA

if you are getting the same error with USB i wouldn't think your ps/2 would be fried. have you tried just running the keyboard ps/2 and not the mouse? i think it will boot without a mouse

I just hooked up the PS2 keyboard by itself and nothing changed. It boots up into Windows just fine, but once I get the error about no mouse, I'm stuck, no response from the keyboard.

Strangely, if I hit Delete rapidly after I first power on, it will go into the BIOS setup menu, but once I'm in there, the keyboard stops doing anything.

TIA

i have no idea what would cause that. i have had it happen once or twice, but i end up re-seating the cables and all is well

only thing i can think of is to reset the cmos, but i don't know if that would help at all

I reset the CMOS, but to no avail. Still nothing from the keyboard or mouse. Glc told me that it must be the mobo failing.

Thanks hobey.

Find/borrow an older keyboard and mouse that don't use the adapter and connect directly to the PS/2. See if the system will boot with them. If they do, then plug in the usb keyboard and mouse, one at a time in the usb ports and have the software/drivers ready to complete the install. Then shut down the system, remove the PS/2 devices and reboot with the keyboard and mouse in the usb ports. Then shut down and try them again with the adapters in the PS/2 ports. 98 can be a pain with adapters.

I tried without the adapters, using USB. I also tried an older keyboard I have that is directly PS/2. No luck with any combination I tried.

I don't think its Windows98, since I can't even use the keyboard to get to the BIOS when I first startup.

The board is an old, bargain-bin find, so I'm not surprised the ports died. Now I have an excuse to upgrade.

Thanks all.

Last thought. Try clearing the CMOS and see if they come back.
