Two things make it much better then the old Parallel ATA.
1. Smaller data cables. Gone are the wide gray cables. SATA uses very thin wires, making cable management much easier. 2. Higher data rates. Currently SATA is 150Mb/s but the technology allows for increased rates, 300Mb/s and up to 600Mb/s in the future. This is necessary because currently the 133Mb/s maximum of PATA is becoming a limitation. In short, if you are making a new build, definetly get SATA. It's worth it.

I dont think so. Even on the fastest HD, the raptor, the maximum speed it can reach is 125 MB/s, and almost every disk is around 70 Mb/s is burst read speed. ATA 133 is only necessary for disks like raptor, and SATA is unnecessary at the moment.

SATA is simpler to install (just plug it in and that's it), it uses thinner cables (provides better airflow, thus better cooling), always direct point to point connections (so you can install the drives wherever you want).
Also, many newer boards only have 1x PATA, but 4x (or more) SATA. Save PATA for the optical drives (as there are only a few opticals for SATA), and go SATA with the hard drives. RJ
