The Third & Fourth - Master/Slave Devices are NOT listed in the BIOS Menu,
(only the Primary and Secondary ones).I have no problem starting the computer, (Win2000) if using the Primary & Secondary IDE connectors/channels. These IDE channels and devices are shown in the BIOS as well.. However, by connecting to the "blue" Third & Fourth IDE, (with the 80-conductors cable) - I need to press the F1 in order to boot up - (and the Third&Fourth IDE devices are NOT listed in the BIOS either).I am using the latest Asus CUBX related BIOS versions.. Is this missing "listing" of the Third/Fourth IDE- channels are "inherent" to this particular Mother board/BIOS or can it be changed?I could of course, use the Primary/Secondary again, but they are the "older" (slower) IDE channels and my devices are faster types so, why not to utilize the better "performance" , (transfer rates).. I would greatly appreciate your help/idea

The 3rd and 4th channels are controlled by the addon IDE controller (CMD or Promise, depending on board model) and will only show up in the controller's BIOS display. I believe the controller must be enabled in the main BIOS before its display will activate and allow you to enter its setup and configure it. Check your manual, Asus manuals are generally very well written. The CMD controller was a dud, nothing but problems, but the Promise works well.
CUBX = CMD CUBX-E = Promise CUBX-L = no addon controller |

Thanks GLC !
Unfortunately, my CUBX has been provided with a CMD Ultra DMA IDE Controller and the ASUS manual is only mentioning that "80-conductor IDE cable must be used and that the Onboard PCI ATA 66 Chip must be Enabled", (which is the case here otherwise I could not start the Windows at all). The "CMD Ultra DMA IDE Controller" has been listed in the Win2000 Device Manager, (installed correctly it seems)? What I am unsure is this: could there be simultaneously more than one "BIOS" active during start up? For example during boot up I can see both the "Award Medallion Bios v6.0" and "ASUS CUBX ACPI BIOS Rev. 1007" mentioned, (and they do not "see" any HD etc.,). Could it be so, that even the CMD has its "own" BIOS, (which is unseen by me, as the screens run throughout too fast)? - Is there a way to "freez" each boot-up page, so I could study the content? Otherwise, if the CMD is a "dud" perhaps I do not have a chance for the "automatic" boot-up? |

Due to the problems with the CMD, I think I'd disable it and just use the standard IDE channels. You won't notice much difference between ATA33 and ATA66 anyway.
I'm a bit confused - are you saying that it boots fine with the boot drive on the CMD, it just doesn't display the drive? If so, don't worry about it. |
