Fried Ram or mobo?

So yesterday some moron cut through some power line in my grid and it cut power and then the power company had some problems getting it back online or whatnot. So I come home after power is restored, try to cut on my desktop and nothing. Open it up and look at the power supply and stuck my nose in there and smelled like something had fried. Took out that p/s and indeed it smelled burnt.

Put in an older p/s that I know works and the computer did cut on but will not get through POST. It will come up with the processor and then go to memory test. says Memory testing: 524288K OK but will not proceed after that. Cannot hit DEL to go into setup. cant do anything. Do not have spare RAM to check to see if the RAM is bad or its the motherboard. Is it more likely the RAM or the mobo? I'm trying to find a spare stick of RAM from somebody but might have to buy one to check it. If its not that RAM im guessing the only other main thing it would be is the mobo but guess theres not really much way to check that. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Sounding like the motherboard to me at the moment too, especially given you cant get at the BIOS. Are there any error beeps when you turn it on? does the memory total look about right to you?... does it stop immediately, during or after or does something happen after the mem test before it freezes?

No error beeps. Supposed to be 512megs of ram in it. Not sure if it freezes once it starts the mem test or once its done. Kinda hard to tell.

I would think the motherboard would frie first before the Ram, but before you go buying a new motherboard I would check the Ram. After wot happened it could be both or more.(good luck)

Try pulling the CMOS battery to reset the bios to default.

Thanks for the CMOS suggestion but that didn't change anything. Am going to try a different stick of RAM but have to wait till monday to get my hands on it I think. If that doesn't work then I'm guessing its the mobo or both.

Remove the memory stick and see if the system beeps,if it beeps, mobo may be okay.
If it beeps, reinstall memory and remove video card and see if it beeps when you restart the computer.
Remove components when power is completely removed from system, same when reinstalling.
Turn power off by the switch on the power supply.

If the keyboard is faulty, the system may not boot,as you've said, when you hit del,you can't get into bios.
Start with the simplest first!

"System has detected no keyboard is present... please press F4 to continue" he he... I remember seeing an error like that when I was doing my courses... very silly, yeah well, i guess checking the keyboard is an option although this sounds more sinister? lets hope not.
