USB to centronics cable help required
I Have a Brother HL -760 printer which has a parallel centronics cable on LPT1.
I am awaiting a new computer which does not have the parallel port. So I bought a USB to centronics cable, to see if it works on my old computer first, but I am unable to get the printer to work. The computer recognises the printer and the wizard appears, I follow all the screen prompts and it seems OK. A new printer icon appears in the printer folder. I have checked to see which port it uses and it says USB, when I try to print a document nothing happens. Any help appreciated as I do not want to buy another printer as this one still works fine and I have a spare drum and 5 toners. Regards Bill |

Hi Bill:
I would not think that it is possible to work a parallel printer that way, since usb is a serial data flow and the other is parallel, so without some kind of a converter to convert the data stream from serial to parallel and visa versa I don't see how that can work. I'm sure you can research that and if I'm correct your solution may be an add on card for the new PC that has a parallel port on it..

Thanks
Hi ktkendall
not knowing much about computers I just assumed that if I bought a USB to centronics cable this would work, silly me. Unfortunately as I have order a new laptop it will be unlikely that I can upgrade it with a card. So thanks anyway Regards Bill |

I do not know for sure that it will not work, cause why would they make such a cable if there were no uses for it, and as you said the printer is recognized and installs, but i'm just giving U my educated guess as to why yours is not working..

Those adapters do work, but not with all parallel printers. If you have a desktop computer, why not just leave it connected to that, and network your laptop?
