old HP wont boot to cd or floppy?!?!

a friend of mine gave me a computer of his and a win2k disk. the computer had WinME on it and he wanted me to wipe the drive and install win2k. so i pop the disk in, goto BIOS set to boot from cd and restart. it loaded winME.

i tried different things and could not get it to boot from CD so i went into WinME and opened the Win2k disk that way and installed it but all the old data is still there and he wanted a clean install. so i tried again and the same thing happened.

i thought i would try using FDISK to wipe the drive but it wont boot from floppy either. so now i have 2 versions of win2k setup on it and am stuck. how can i wipe the drive and do a clean install?

EDIT: its an HP with 64MB of ram and a 733mhz celly.

With a HP, hit ESC a few times when the HP splash screen comes up, it should bring up a boot menu.

By the way, you do NOT want to install Win2K on a machine with only 64mb of ram, trust me.

ok, i'll give that a try, thanks!

i was thinking that 64mb wasn't enough for 2k but i figured i would try it, it came with winME, how much different would it be with win2k?

98SE is the best OS for 64mb.

well i hit ESC and got the boot menu, used FDISK and wiped the disk but still can't get it to boot from CD. it started to before i got to FDISK (hit the wrong button) but i restarted it and booted to floppy. now it will boot to floppy and try to boot to HDD, no OS error, but not CD.

btw, BIOS shows 95mb of RAM so i guess he upgraded it sometime, it says 64mb on the sticker on the front.

EDIT: i just noticed that when i click boot from cd and let it sit there it locks up, it just shows a black screen with a blinking cursor.

Have you tried different bootable CD's? I'm sorta betting that the 2K CD he gave you may be a burned copy and wasn't created properly.

actually yes it is a burnt copy but he said it was a backup, he has the real copy in a case in his desk, so he says anyway.... either way its not my problem, i'm just doing what he asks. he did say that the original was scratched a little which is why be burnt a copy to try and keep the orig in as good condition as possible. i guess that could also have been a problem. i'll see if i can't get the orig off him at work on monday. thanks for the help.

ok, i got the disk off him and tried installing it, it gets to where it loads files (right after the "press f6" screen) and stops on loading Machine Identification Data.
