Dell Motherboard Upgrade?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that only has PCI bus types. I want to upgrade to AGP and have done a little research but haven't got any concrete information. I'm very new to upgrading pc's (installed Radeon 9250,512mb ram thats it). I'm trying to find out if I can install the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe Socket 478 Intel 875P ATX Intel Motherboard and still be able to use the rest of my Dell's components. I have done some searching and am fairly confident my processors a 478 socket(chip set Intel 845gv) so I'm assuming I can use it. I already intend on purchasing a new video card and memory but I've had conflicting info about being able to use the originally installed windows xp. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

More than likely, you won't be able to install the new mobo, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Dell uses proprietary cases, meaning that the screw holes on the motherboard probably won't line up with those on the case. Secondly, Dells use proprietary power supplies that generally won't work with standard motherboards - and you can't replace it because standard PSUs won't fit in the case.

The 2400 is a micro ATX case. You will need a new case and power supply for any standard motherboard out there. Might as well build a new computer.

Sounds like I'll be doing my first build soon, I seen in the build section someone had posted a build sheet but has anyone posted any links to any reasonably priced component sites, and possibly any troublesome brands? I appreciate everyones help Thank You.

Well it depends on what you want to do with your pc, for extrem gaming i would spend more on the video card and the ram. For a work station, i would concentrate on the CPU and drives ect...

Newegg.com is a excellent website with quality service and cheap prices. The only post with relation to good and bad brands as far as i can remember is the power supply thread, here is a link http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Dark Nova as far as my needs for a pc, I'm a big fan of the battlefield games and was dissapointed when I bought BF2 and couldnt play it(read what system requirements ). So originally I just wanted to upgrade my Dells video card(again) but when I searched the EA website I found a list of compatible video cards and to my suprise no PCI types . Now its looking like I cant do anything to the Dell to change to an AGP type. If you have any suggestions on salvaging what I already have that would be great. I dont want to spend a ton of money to play one game, so I dont need a top end machine but rather one that I can play BF2 smoothly.

Colecifer thanks for the thread that will be real helpful.

Well ill tell you my story with Dell, 3 years ago i bought a dell TOP of the line. During the time, dell use RD ram, for ONLY a year. now, i cant even find RD ram im stuck with 256MB of RD ram (Dell who sold RD ram to many costumers dont even have RD ram in their store). yes i can run BF vietnam on it but it laggs like crap. SO i made my own. cost me much more, but i know that i can upgrade everything in my pc.

I know this story has nothing to do with the topic. But why spend money on a Video card to play one game, when you save your money to buy i better one. BTW never buy a dell again, they will try to take every penny from you

That blows Dark Nova. When Vietnam came out my Dell was stock(128 ram), I couldnt evem move in the game I would fire a shot and about 10 seconds later the round would go off. I went and got a 512mb 2700 ddr and the radeon 9250 256mb and it ran great, I was happy with it till now. Oh well I'm sure I'll be posting a build list soon.

Hi

regarding your build, it very much depends on what you have to spend. If you post your list in the "new build" section im sure someone will advise on componants. For a gaming system, these are my basic opinions.

AMD processors are considered the best for gaming. Go for an Athlon 64, anything beyond 3000+

Get AT LEAST 1gb of ram (corsair is a good brand), more if you can afford. BF2 gets very memory hungry.

For your AMD 64, get a Motherboard that supports Socket939 Processors, and PCI-Express graphics. This is the new technology that will help with future upgrades. Gigabyte, ASUS, and ABIT are good choices.

Get as strong a graphics card as you can. an Nvidia 6600GT is good, a 6800GT better if you can afford.

Just a few basics to get you started
